A rare drink these days but Mrs C brought a bottle back from the town today and its destined to be consumed tomorrow night with duck on the plate. Years since I've tried the stuff but on checking it was apparently available from yesterday. Anyone tried it this time around?

Sorry, but at less than 6 weeks from harvest to being on the shelves, it’s not for me.

Equally, I'd not given this much thought in recent decades. I recall going to Paris 25ish years ago and being surprised how big BN day was there at that time. Locals getting quite Huckleberryly Pear as they swigged it out of plastic glasses - most unParisian, I remember thinking... As European markets have declined - it seems they've been promoting to audiences further afield - https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20191121_17/ |

All that nostalgia about Paris brought back old memories of visits to Au Pied Au Cochon in the street by Les Halles so I braved Mrs C's wrath and negotiated deferring the duck in favour of steak & frits. I topped it off by hunting down a couple of cans of 1664 in St Ouens and some escargots which had probably been in the freezer far too long. The Beaujolais was probably overpriced but after drinking the 1664 it went down brilliantly with the steak & although I'll have a rioja with the duck tomorrow and do double dog walking duty to settle the wrath of Mrs C it was worth every penny.

For some reason, my home city celebrates this every year. https://www.walesonline.co.uk/whats-on/food-drink-news/live-updates-beaujolais-day-swansea-15419370

I take it all back. Got convinced by a supplier to put it on the shelves ,so I decided to try it for the first time in a while. Well worth a punt this year.

There is now such a thing as English Nouveau - article in The Times recently... The West Midlands is perhaps the last place you might imagine taking on the might of the Burgundy wine region. Yet a Herefordshire vineyard has created the first British Beaujolais as English winemakers take on the French. The Sixteen Ridges estate near Ledbury will start selling its English Nouveau later this month in a direct challenge to Beaujolais Nouveau. Nouveau wines are different from normal wines. The speed of the fermenting process creates a lighter-bodied, paler drink with a fruitier, sweeter flavour. |

Some pretty decent stuff being produced all over the UK now, not just in the South Downs heartland. The Montgomery Rondo from Powys and Ovens Farm Bacchus from the Lincolnshire Wolds are well worth trying

This year, it'll be a half hearted celebration. Still, we'll get pictures in the local papers. Fat, orange women drinking Prosecco. Roiders in tight shirts drinking pints of lager.

We used to be fairly regular visitors to Stockwith Mill Tearoom, which is literally a few hundred yards away - yet I never knew the vineyard existed. I can imagine the topography is perfect for wine there, knowing where it sits.

In the " good ole days" (early 80s) Beaujolais Nouveau Day was a fantastic excuse to slurp early. As far as I recall there were people who drove it over to your 'local wine bar' from France :-)
Willy's Wine Bar in Birmingham was one of those............happy days

that was part of the fun Kimbo, you weren't meant to sip it - the taste improved immeasurably by the time you started the third pint...

In these parts we prefer Tetley's Nouveau. At least we did when we could get anywhere near a clubhouse bar.

The Masons Arms in Taunton used to do a good Beaujolais Nouveau day, sadly the pub is no more. Landlord used to drive to France to get it but I have my doubts...

Just 'Pass'.
Can't be doing with it. You can buy drinkable wine for not much more.
