So - scrums are to be abolished in RL for the rest of this season - was there ever a scrum anyway???
Please, please, please don't let Union follow, suit!!!

If it's needed for rugby league, where the scrum lasts 20 seconds, I would have thought Union will need to follow suit. |

It makes perfect sense in RL. The scrum has not really served a purpose in the last 10 years. On these few occasions when a team does try something they are generally told to stop pushing.

It takes 12 players out and creates more space to score tries

True..but only for that 1 tackle. RL have been having discussions about removing scrums in favour of a tap restart anyway prior to Covid. I guess it's a perfect opportunity to trial it

I worry about the calls to abolish the scrum , the constant moaning by certain ex back commentators ( Austin Healey and others) . We all like the game to flow as much as possible but the scrum is an integral part of our game and what makes it special. The unique requirement for heavy, strong players, tall athetic and fast team members makes our game unique .

I always said it was the lesser code and this just confirms it. Without scrums, it's just not rugby.

A shame they're not going this way instead: I'm sure I remember RL scrums being contested in the 70's and 80's - not in the same way as our scrums, but there was definitely a flailing of legs by both hookers and even the odd win against the head.

Can anybody advise whether it is actually against the laws of RL to push in the scrum - ah forget that question I've just read the Guardian article!! If not illegal I would like to see a team take that initiative and shunt their opposition backwards which would probably see a collapse and a right good trampling for the defending pack - attitudes would soon change - it would only happen once! 😂😂
If you got rid of scrums in our code it would no longer be a game that could be played by all shapes and sizes which is surely one of its most appealing traits and makes it so special

I am fairly sure it is not illegal to push in a RL scrum |

Widnes did this in the RL about 15 years ago, the had a Rugby Union scrum coach. It confused the hell out of the opposition and started a few brawls but think the law was tweaked to stop it, it other words side feeding the ball will automatically get the ball.

In RL there seems little point in scrums if sides can't contest them, you might as well make sides tap and go.

I'm surprised that in the move to speed up the game and create more space they haven't already gone down to 11 players. Rugby Union can then drop the props, go down to 13 and have the space thy need. ![]() |

In Super League it actually happens a couple of times a season - youtube is full of examples. To be clear, the scrum rules in RL are still as written - how to form them, how they are to be contested, etc, there's just an understanding (essentially) that you don't do it. PiffPaff has described what essentially happens, but the laws of RFL still assume contested scrums.
