Some poor discipline there from ET. Something i'd assume they'd try and change before entering the Prem otherwise alot of games could finish with 14 players or less....

First off, huge congratulations to Ealing Trailfinders. I hope they now play their rugby games in the Premiership next season as they thoroughly deserve to. They have won the league fair and square and I wish them all the luck in the world.

Secondly, well done to Doncaster for pushing Ealing all the way.

But most of all, well done to my team, Ampthill, who finish sixth in their very first full season, ending their campaign with a wonderful bonus point draw away to Cornish Pirates. Surely this is something to build on for next season.

I also think my equal second standing in the prediction table at the end of last week will see me tumble downwards after this week’s set of results.
Always trying to stay bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

Now for the appeal - hope the RFU see sense. If not I just don’t know what the options are.

Well done Ampthill for fighting back to get that bonus point draw.

Cup competition next and we have Pirates next weekend - could have hoped for an easier draw than that….
Onward and Upwards C'mon Donny!

Ealing cruised to a comfortable victory against a very spirited Richmond who refused to give up playing proper rugby, despite repeated, often devastating, counter-attacks. Fittingly, Ealing were presented with the Championship trophy after the match by an appropriate RFU bigwig.

Except they weren’t. All the bigwigs were quite understandably otherwise engaged by that ever so vital Varsity match at Twickenham. So the Middlesex county representative presented the trophy instead - rather generously refered to by some as a ‘little-wig’. Absolutely no disrespect towards the gentleman in question, it wasn’t his fault, but doesn’t that just sum up the entire RFU’s attitude towards its primary league?

I spotted Chris Cutherbertson RFU. He is a littlewig and played rugby for Hammersmith and Fulham. No disrespect to Chris who is a genuine Rugby man. Just another kick in the bol locks for Ealing

That's very amateur to not even have a member from the NGB there to present the award...

Presumably Shanners had to be at Twickenham with CURUFC not at Bishop Stortford with Cllub.
The joy of having two jobs.

To be slightly fair to the RFU, the Championship should have been settled last week, but then they would all have been at the cabbage patch for the Red Roses match.

It has subsequently been pointed out to me that I was misinformed as to exactly who was present from the RFU. I am happy to retract a little of the irony from my previous post, but not necessarily the sentiment.

Well done Ealing!

And credit to Donny for taking the title battle to the last day… & to Pirates for their unbeaten home stretch.

Finally kudos to Ampthill the draw specialists, & unlucky not to have won in Jersey for their first ‘D’. So they were 8th in the table after scoring their late try yesterday… & then up to 6th seconds later as the result of what sounds like a tricky conversion = fair play.

We await news of Ealing’s appeal & news of who might be joining us from N1. I went to RP v Caldy yesterday, a fine/exciting match between 2 excellent sides. Caldy in the driving seat now, but not by much & 3 pursuers (Park, Sale & Cambridge) could all catch them. April will probably be rather more exciting for N1 than in the level above… Sleepy

Some interesting views on the RFU representation at the Ealing Game yesterday that I think are off the mark.

Chris Cuthbertson has been involved in the game for a long time as has been noted, but I think the point needs to made that he is still Secretary of Hammersmith & Fulham Rugby club and has been for 20 odd years. Chris is man steeped in rugby experience. How many RFU board members are there who have that direct current involvement in running a community club. Indeed, how many of them have ever run a rugby club? One day making decisions on a budget of millions, the next trying to balance the books at his club when the coach company wants to increase charges by 10%.

I hear Chris is stepping down from his positions at the RFU after 19 years service and having worked with Chris, I can say the loss of his experience at all levels of English rugby is a huge loss, which most definitely needs to be replaced at RFU Board level.

HOPEFULLY the 'other' RFU person present, Tom Ilube, the Chairman of the RFU and the RFU's most senior representative (who choose to come to Ealing and not watch the Varsity match), will understand that folks like Chris are the the backbone of the game and the board must hear their voices

I think having the Top Chaps from country and county present winners medals to the players and the league trophy to our Captain, Rayn Smidt was perfect.

To suggest that there was some kind of snub intended is baffling beyond belief!!
What a blessing it would be if we could open and shut our ears as easily as we open and shut our eyes!

The Champ was originally set to finish on 19/3 (when many of the RFU top brass were no doubt in Greengage Paree)

I think I’m the guilty party here, which I have acknowledged in a subsequent post. I was the inadvertent victim of misinformation that I should have checked before posting - but post victory celebrations probably got the better of me. Notwithstanding, I do think the RFU in general are disrespectful of the Championship and its winners - surely promotion is earned on the field, not the office.

Whilst we all believe the Championship winners deserve a season in the Premiership (or longer). Am heartened that the scrap for 2nd place on National One is still underway.

After visiting Cambridge about 15 years ago when a family member required specialist care at Addenbrookes I took a breather one tough weekend watching the Blood and Sand.

I hope in my life that Bedford and Cambridge play at least one season in the same league. I would say on a level playing field…but Bedford might never achieve that.

The older I get, the more the RFU leave me confused.

Scrap for 1st Place is still on. Any one of Four could still finish top, including Cambridge.

Chris's successor as Middlesex RFU Council Rep is Andrew Smart Chairman Harrow RFC, Chairman of the Middlesex competitions (Merit Tables etc). Andrew is passionate about the community game and in my opinion a perfect replacement. Also he's a top bloke. He starts 1st August

Tom Ilube zoomed into the last Middlesex management meeting. He sat through the whole session and at the end held up a mind map he made during the session. He was geuinely interested in the community level.
