Am I right in thinking that the French teams have the benefit of playing in municipal stadiums, saving a significant amount of costs?

Certainly Toulouse do so

A good many do. However, I think Stade Toulousain own their own ground? Never been, but have driven past. Impressive from the fleeting glimpses I had.

Stade Toulousain is not municipal.

It’s part owned by the club, and part owned by a sort of charity organisation. Les Amies du Stade Toulousain.

I did a survey of how it works re. Municipal Stadia in France a couple of years ago while under lockdown.

The municipal stadia are generally town centre, and locals turn up for what ever is on. And tickets are (were, when I did the research) generally very cheap.

I started with a free two month trial. Then, when I cancelled I was offered a further two months for half price (£7.99 per month). At the end of that I cancelled again and was offered the same thing again!

I think the golden rule with BT/SKY/Prem Sport etc is to always say (very nicely) that you aren't going to renew and then wait for the much reduced deal to be offered. It's a silly game we have to play with TV, insurance and the like.

The talk about Pro D2 then moves quickly onto Stade Toulousain, who aren't a D2 side...

But the general point about the scale of Pro D2 stands - the scale of club finances is way beyond the Championship. When Jersey Reds played Breton side Vannes in 3 pre-season games, I recall their budget was in the region of 4-5 times the size, and their average attendance in the municipally-owned stadium being around 8,000 at the time - this was just before Covid. Big corporate and civic support, and a TV deal. In the circumstances we were pleasantly surprised to be able to compete against them on the field, with a win, a loss and a draw across the three games...

I still look out for Vannes, it's great they got to the Top 14 and with 2 games to go they still have a slim chance of retaining their place in the top-tier
