Boss Schmidt opens door to overseas Wallabies

Quote
Australia might relax their preference for fielding Australian-based players to give themselves the best shot of beating the British and Irish Lions in this summer's series.

The Wallabies have generally opted for players either at domestic teams, or with a commitment to return to play in the country.

The policy was previously formalised as 'Giteau's Law' - a limit on the number of players an Australian head coach could pick from overseas, which varied on the number of caps individuals had won - but it has been loosened in recent years., external

Back row Langi Gleeson, who played in all four of Australia's November internationals, had his invitation to a training camp rescinded in January after it was reported he had agreed a move to French side Montpellier.

However, Schmidt says the strength of the Lions squad announced last week might mean he takes a softer line with overseas talent.

"We don't want to discount anyone because, as [Lions head coach] Andy [Farrell's] done and the coaches, they've picked a form squad," said Schmidt.

"I stay in touch with those guys who are overseas.

"We would love to pick a form squad.

"But, as I've always said, if there's anything that we think is 50-50, it's more difficult to absorb someone from the outside the groups that play together already."

Former Saracens second row Will Skelton, now with La Rochelle, Bordeaux's in-form back row Peter Samu and Japan-based centre Samu Kerevi are among those who could benefit.

James O'Connor, 34, who was Australia's starting fly-half in all three Tests of the series defeat by the Lions in 2013, has also run into form with New Zealand's Crusaders.

Wallaby Suaalii in race to face Lions with broken jaw

Quote
Australia's code-crossing star Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii is to have surgery to fix a fractured jaw, putting the 21-year-old under pressure to be fit for the British and Irish Lions tour.

Suaalii was concussed in a collision with Waratah's team-mate Andrew Kellaway during their defeat by Queensland Reds on Friday.

It was then found that he had a "small, undisplaced fracture" which needed an operation.

Suaalii is likely to be sidelined for at least four weeks.

"This is unfortunate for us and especially for Joseph. We wish him all the best in his recovery and return to full health," Waratahs coach Dan McKellar said.

"We will do all we can to facilitate his recovery in consultation with Rugby Australia to have him in the best shape possible for his availability for the Wallabies."

The Waratahs' Super Rugby campaign is set to end during Suaalii's absence with only three rounds of the regular season remaining and play-off qualification only a distant possibility.

The utility back, who made his debut in professional rugby union in Australia's win over England in November, could potentially make a return to action in the Wallabies' warm-up Test against Fiji on 6 July, or the Waratahs' own match against the Lions the day before.

Kiss to lead combined Australia-NZ team against Lions

Quote
Incoming Wallabies coach Les Kiss will lead a combined Australia and New Zealand side that will play the British and Irish Lions this summer.

It will be the first combined Australia and New Zealand team since 1989 and they will play a Lions side who start a three-Test series against Australia on Saturday, 19 July in Brisbane.

Kiss, who will take over from Joe Schmidt as Australia coach in 2026, will have former All Blacks head coach Ian Foster as an assistant for the game in Adelaide on Saturday, 12 July.

"It's a privilege to be able to lead the coaching group for the combined AUNZ Invitational XV," said Kiss, currently Queensland Reds head coach.

"The British and Irish Lions are one of world sport's most renowned teams and to be able to play them at an iconic Australian venue such as the Adelaide Oval will be an incredible spectacle.

"I'm looking forward to working with a coach like Ian who has wide-ranging experience at the highest level of the game and linking up with the wider management in due course."

World Cup-winning former Australia international and ex-Tonga coach Toutai Kefu will lead a First Nations and Pasifika XV that will play the Lions on Tuesday, 22 July in between the first and second Tests against Australia.

"I feel honoured to be named head coach of the first ever First Nations and Pasifika XV," said Kefu.

"First Nations and Pasifika people contribute massively to the game all around the world and the significance of this game in celebrating those ongoing contributions can't be overstated, especially against a team with the history of the British and Irish Lions."

Lions consider golden point extra time proposal

Quote
The British and Irish Lions board is considering a proposal for sudden-death extra time if a deciding third Test this summer against Australia finishes in a draw.

Rugby Australia chief Phil Waugh revealed he suggested at meetings in London that 'golden point' extra time - which means the first team to score wins - should be played in such circumstances.

In 2017, the Lions and New Zealand shared the series after the deciding third Test finished 15-15, with captain Sam Warburton saying it was "a bit of an anticlimax for the players".

Former New Zealand head coach Steve Hansen said the draw was "a bit like kissing your sister and no-one wants that".

"We've had some really constructive conversations. That's got to go to the Lions board around whether it's a drawn series, or you decide it through golden point or extra time," Waugh told the Sydney Morning Herald., external

"Our preference, if we put the fans at the centre of everything we're doing, I think that the familiarity that everyone has with 'golden point' and the interest for that in our market is a good guide.

"Obviously, we will be making sure both parties agree. But I think that if you're thinking about some fan engagement, that's certainly very appealing."

For regular season games this year, Super Rugby Pacific brought in 'golden point',, external where if the teams are level at full-time then an 10 minutes of extra time is played, with a draw then declared if there is no winning score.

In April, Australian side Western Force and New Zealand's Hurricanes played out a thrilling 17-17 draw, with no score in extra time.

For Super Rugby Pacific knockout games, two 10-minute periods of standard extra time are played.

If the teams are still level, up to 10 minutes of golden point extra time are played, followed by a kicking competition if necessary.

Confirmation of 20-minute red card

Waugh confirmed both sides had agreed that the 20-minute red card will be used during the series.

The rule means the offending team can replace the red-carded player 20 minutes after being reduced to 14 players.

This year's Six Nations used 20-minute red cards for the first time after a trial at the Autumn Nations Cup in November.

Ireland centre Garry Ringrose, who will tour Australia this summer with the Lions, was given a first-half 20-minute red card against Wales.

Once the 20 minutes passed, Bundee Aki replaced Ringrose and played a key role in seeing the game home for Ireland.

"We've been very vocal in our support for the 20-minute red card," Waugh added.

The Lions will play a warm-up match against Argentina in Dublin on 20 June before leaving for Australia, with the three-match Test series against the Wallabies starting in Brisbane on 19 July.

Sale's Opoku-Fordjour called up to Lions training squad

Quote
Sale's 20-year-old tight-head prop Asher Opoku-Fordjour has been called up to the British and Irish Lions training squad.

Opoku-Fordjour has only won one cap for England but will now travel to Portugal next week as the Lions prepare for the match with Argentina in Dublin on Friday, 20 June.

With 12 players from United Rugby Championship (URC) finalists Leinster unavailable for training next week, as well as those from Premiership finalists Bath and Leicester, Lions boss Andy Farrell is in desperate need of extra bodies to prepare for the Pumas.

After taking on Argentina at Aviva Stadium, the Lions will fly to Perth before their first match in Australia against the Western Force on 28 June.

Farrell is particularly short of options in the front row. Hookers Dan Sheehan and Ronan Kelleher are still on Leinster duty, leaving Luke Cowan-Dickie the only hooker from the original party available for training in the coming week.

Meanwhile, at tight-head the Lions are seriously stretched. Tadhg Furlong is an injury concern and is also with Leinster, Bath's Will Stuart is unavailable, while Scotland and Glasgow's Zander Fagerson is recovering from a calf strain.

Opoku-Fordjour's Lions call-up comes at the end of a breakthrough season. He won his first England cap in the autumn and made the shortlist for Premiership young player of the season. He started for Sale in Saturday's 21-16 defeat by Leicester at Welford Road.

Meanwhile, Ireland prop Finlay Bealham and England hooker Jamie George are also expected to be called into the Lions squad, with official confirmation of the additions expected on Monday.

Yes, very sad news for Zander missing out on making the tour.

It will be interesting to see how Bealham and Asher Opoku-Fordjour get on in the Lions training camp, and which might make the squad for the match against Argentina on 20th June.

Injury crisis brewing for British & Irish Lions with Zander Fagerson out of tour

Quote
The British & Irish Lions are facing mounting injury problems at tighthead prop with Zander Fagerson ruled out of the tour of Australia amid serious question marks over Tadhg Furlong’s fitness.

Glasgow’s Fagerson has withdrawn from the squad due to a calf injury with the Ireland and Connacht tighthead prop Finlay Bealham added to the 38-man group as a result. Furlong, meanwhile, has not featured for Leinster since the Champions Cup semi-final defeat by Northampton on 3 May and is also battling with a calf injury.

With Bath’s Will Stuart preparing for Saturday’s Premiership final against Leicester, none of the three initially selected tighthead props are available for the Lions training camp in Portugal this week. Furlong would not have been in Portugal even if fully fit, given Leinster’s club commitments, but Lions head coach Andy Farrell will anxiously await updates on the prop. Furlong has started the last six Lions tests.

Given the depleted ranks, Sale’s 20-year-old front-rower Asher Opoku-Fordjour has been called up to the camp. Unlike Bealham, he has not been added to the full squad but given the uncertainty over Furlong, Opoku-Fordjour – who has just one England cap to his name – has the opportunity to stake his claim.

The former England captain Jamie George has also been added to the training camp. The Leinster duo of Dan Sheehan and Ronan Kelleher are both absent given the province’s involvement in Saturday’s United Rugby Championship final so George – who was unlucky to miss out on the initial squad – comes in to add to the hooker ranks. Luke Cowan-Dickie will also be at the Portugal training camp after Sale’s Premiership semi-final defeat by Leicester on Saturday.

In total, 17 of the players initially selected in the 38-man squad are unavailable in Portugal. The 12-strong Leinster contingent as well as Finn Russell and Stuart of Bath and Ollie Chessum of Leicester have not made the trip, nor Fagerson or Toulouse’s Blair Kinghorn.

Farrell said: “It’s tough on Zander to miss out so close to the Tour, but now Finlay gets an opportunity to come in and add to the group. This is unfortunately part and parcel of the game, so we always have to be prepared for that.

“But it’s great to finally be at the stage where we can get on to the training ground and get to work with these players. Portugal will be really important for us as we look to get our house in order with only a few training sessions before we take on Argentina in the 1888 Cup in Dublin.” That tour curtain-raiser takes place at the Aviva Stadium on Friday week.
