Club rugby needs a radical fix – but is R360 breakaway league the cure to its ills?

Why does Mandy Rice Davies most famous line come to mind? "He would say that, wouldn't he." Mind you, I still think the whole idea has been worked out on a fag packet At the moment, it needs a TV contract, sponsors, franchise owners, to pay for the hire of stadia and training facilities. Once you have heads of agreement of that, then you need to recruit 400 players, dozens of coaches, etc. And I just do not see how you get there. In the meantime, there are rumours - albeit in Wales Online - of the URC replacing two Welsh franchises with ones in Chicago and Miami. |

The reason that all Premiership clubs are losing money and nearly all of them have balance sheets where liabilities exceed assets (even after including their P shares at a scarcely believable £17m per club!) is that Rugby Union is a minority sport in the UK that does not draw either the physical attendances or the digital eyeballs to provide the riches that the delusionals believe will be unlocked by differing competition models.
If every business in an industry is losing money it almost always means the industry is a basket case. My view is that not one of the current crop of owners would persist with such failing business if they had realistic alternatives to exit and none of these supposedly savvy business men would invest in such enterprises again. Coming up with tweaks and potential radical new competition models like franchising or global club competitions may give the owners of the Premiership Clubs and the senior management of the RFU warm feelings but I suspect that they could more easily and cheaply get such warm feelings by pi***ng down their trouser legs
