Something of a contrast between the situation north of Hadrian's Wall and what we've had in the Champ...

I watched a number of the super 6 games last year (combination of 6 months furlough and lack of other sport) - the standard was similar to Level 4 in England.

So, the question needs to be asked why the RFU cannot get a decent TV coverage for the Championship - it just needs selling!

I understand an offer was made, but it involved some games being moved to Thursdays.

Gerg_861 posted this in September in  http://leaguerugby.co.uk/broadcast-deal_topic18723.html

Not everything is all the RFU's fault.

Just a bit of background: All the proposed TV matches (initially one per round) were going to be on Thursday nights; not surprisingly, this wasn't popular with home clubs whose match-day income (tix/food/drink/merchandise) would have suffered, and there was a wider problem about the impact on the previous weekend's fixtures (with fixtures involving the following week's 'Thursday teams' potentially moved from their original Sat/Sun slots to Friday, to avoid 4/5-day turn-around times). The TV plan was postponed from Sept to Jan, and then canned for the rest of the season.

That was because the Championship season competes with the peak soccer season.
The FOSROC games are in May and June, so after the end of the season for most sports. So, in a fallow period for TV sport.

So perhaps a Championship Cup  - or perhaps a British Cup - in that period would be eassier to sell.

All but 4 of the Champ teams are part time. I would imagine Thursday night matches for the away team would have proved unpopular with the players/physios/managers having to take a day/half day off work to travel and then getting back at who knows what time for the following day's work or having to take even more annual leave.

If a TV deal could be found, what would be the best time to show a match?
Friday Night is frequently used by Premiership.
Would early kick off Saturday (midday) be acceptable.
Or a 5pm? In both cases, the fair weather supporters might be at home watching Premier League football.
Sunday, busy football day, and early afternoon for TV a big post lunch rugby match offers competition to run of mill premier league football.

With some clubs without good floodlights, the midday Saturday would be the best option. Other clubs could show it pre kick 2.30/3.00 for bar revenue.

As pointed out, the RFU doesn’t seem that proactive promoting the league.
Should a TV deal be just Championship, or if you can sell Super 6 be a joint Championship/National 1 levels collaboration?

The older I get, the more the RFU leave me confused.

To get on TV, you need to be filling their dead time.

Let's look the Free Sports schedule:

This Friday evening they have Spanish Soccer.  Now that is going to become Scottish second tier Rugby.
This Saturday Rugby League at1pm, URC at 3pm and MLS from 6pm
However, this Sunday, they have almost nothing - they are repeating the MLS that was shown in the small hours.

Offering them a game on 2pm on Sunday - they might be interested. However, I suspect they will not pay much.

On a Saturday at the traditional mid afternoon kick-off, no other. Sports on TV is the devil of the sports fan IMO. I followed a Premiership football club for 30 years giving up when Sky Sports took over because of times, work & travel involved. I then had a ticket at Gloucester Rugby for a few seasons, no travel but still plenty of Friday nights, & Sunday matches. Followed Hartpury now for 10 years, only the occasional Friday night games. TV does little for Sports fans, only the armchair ones and fills the pockets of the overpaid top league players & clubs.

With a TV deal, you've got hundreds of factors to take into account. Some of which include
1) Appetite for the market. There's lots of competition not just sports on TV, but with ever increasing programming catering to a market that isn't growing at the same rate.
2) Scheduling, with a TV deal, they will want some control over scheduling and that might mean playing at times that it's not suitable for player/supporters of semi-professional teams
3) Cost. The cost of production is high, so what profitability is there gained from subscription/advertising and will it meet/exceed the costs
4) Rugby at local level isn't of national interest. Most people outside of rugby (or even inside it) would struggle to pick out Ealing/Hartbury/Ampthill on a map, let alone have any interest in watching them play.

Alternative options.
  • For those in a bigger market area there are definitely smaller cable/satelite stations who might want to make a deal with a team rather than a league (not sure if there's a barrier to this) might not be a fee from the station, but, might make it more attractive to sponsors.
  • For the clubs with quick enough broadband and facilities, broadcast your own games and create a nominal charge like the NCA and some rugby league teams do for their highlights package. £12 per season)
  • Link with a local university media department and see if there's a way to YouTube/Facebook Livestream your games (as above)

Is there any chance that the 2021 streaming figures will ever be shared? On The Ruck podcast it was mentioned that Ealing had the worst support, but I wonder if that is 500 for Ealing vs. 1000 for Bedford or 500 for Ealing vs. 50000 for Pirates (numbers pulled out of the air, excepting that Ealing vs. Richmond had 500 viewers).
