Really looking forward to the resumption of league action, especially with our first game being a home one against the Ravers!

The main event is Saturday at 3pm, but we'll also have a gentle warm-up in our own wooden shack, a.k.a. the Pavilion, on Friday - bar open 5- 7.30pm offering the chance for visiting supporters to check out the lie of the land and compare notes with the home guard over a beer and some free nibbles.

I'm aware the official visiting party won't be available for this as they land at 8.15, but understand various others will already be here, so hope they can join, and that we'll get a decent number of Reds along as well.

Nice to see this practice resumed after a few years. I'm sure the official party will be treated brilliantly "upstairs" on match day so a great chance for the rest to meet & greet. The number 9, 22 & 15 buses from Liberation station all drop off within a few hundred yards of the ground.

There is considerable anticipation from many who inhabit Caldy's Bank regarding the trip to Jersey, however there is a level of ignorance regarding everyday life in Jersey that has also led to some anxiety.

Caldy's hierarchy has moved quickly to issue a list of hopefully accurate responses to the most Frequently Asked Questions. I have jotted down some of the most important questions and the official Caldy response below:

1. Wikipedia says they speak Jerisais in Jersey......will Caldy RFC be issuing a phrase book?
Graham has advised that the Jerisais phrase book won't be ready until next season. Graham's suggested work around is to only use Scouse sparingly and inject a few words of French in every other sentence.......if you don't know any French other foreign words will probably suffice as long as they are delivered confidently

2. Which side of the road is it best to drive on in Jersey ?
Graham is sure that everyone in Jersey drives on the left hand side of the road but he has also advised that people in Jersey are generally so wealthy that they all have chauffers so if you don't want to look like a tourist best get chauffered up. Graham has a special hat that Barrie Pilgrim asks him to wear when Graham does the odd driving job for him and this will be available on a first come basis first served basis.

3. Can we get Pot Noodle in Jersey or will we have to take our own?
Graham thinks Pot Noodle is available in Jersey but it is very expensive. Caldy RFC is bringing its own supply of Bombay Bad Boy as an International Saturday breakfast for the players and the official party. Graham has suggested that those who want to take a few pots in their hand luggage should speak to Lynn Ridgway. Lynn still has 120 packs of the 2018 Pot Noodle Christmas Dinner Special available from the club shop. (5% discount for a purchase of 4 or more! ......although only one commorative Pot Noodle 2018 Noel Mug per person)

4. Is everyone in Jersey 6ft 9ins and 19 1/2 stone?
Graham has been assured by Jersey RFC that although Jersey have probably the biggest set of forwards in World Rugby there are people of more average size on the island.......it is considered unlikely there is anyone as small as Graham or Roger

5. Will Robbie Fowler also be coming to Jersey to sign autographs and pose for selfies with star struck Jersey players?
Bob Cooke is trying to organise this but in case Robbie can't make it he will be arranging for another mystery Caldy star supporter to stand in. Bob cannot promise that the mystery Caldy star supporter will also come from the red side of Merseyside but he is confident that he will also wow the Jersey players.

6. Shall I bring Euros? From an ex player who shall remain nameless LOL

Bedford Bear,

to be honest you may have saved Graham a trip to the Post Office.........after we told him that neither pesetas nor francs are used in Jersey he was very keen to change his £ sterling for Euros. His other concern was whether he would get a better rate at Liverpool Airport or West Kirby Post Office........... Barrie Pilgrim suggested that the difference on £24.50 was unlikely to move the needle either way.

I've toured Jersey every year for nearly 2 decades, one Covid year excepted, even tho' I've lived here for 14 years. Mrs Islander looks forward to having me out of the way for 3ish days, even if she has to put up with me turning up to her Veterans tournament with my fellow tourists (the ones who've actually flown over) and then creeping home in a bedraggled state post-tour.

It was the first w/e of October last year, but happily I'd just about recovered for the trip to Caldy a week later, which was equally as enjoyable as my 'staycation tour' had been. I hope the Ravers will have a great time - certainly they seem very well-organised, & travelling in good numbers. I'm only sorry we won't be reciprocating the shirt-sleeve conditions we had up there - going to be pretty nippy this w/e I think, not quite the Mediterranean conditions our tourist board would have you believe.

Bring it on! Thumbs UpBeer

Islander,

Thank you for starting this thread. Our forthcoming visit to Jersey is eagerly anticipated by everyone at Caldy. Graham is giddy with excitement. To get on a plane or a ferry to watch Caldy play a league fixture is momentous ......it has happened before though.

At level 6 or level 7 Caldy were in the same league as the Vagabonds club from the Isle of Man. The aeroplane trip to and from Douglas from Liverpool's then Speke Airport was an event in itself:

One of the party repeatedly set off the security scanner.... it wasn't his phone or his watch.  A brisk frisk gave the all clear. On Friday the Caldy official will be reminded to remove his impressively large and intimate jewellry and place it along with his loose change into the security tray lest he delay the flight.

The game which Caldy won narrowly was characterized by the performance of the Vagabond's tighthead who consistently drove the Caldy scrum backwards at a rate of knots. When post match the Caldy DOR admonished Caldy's freakishly strong loose head Charlie Barwood for not (illegally) dropping the scrum to halt the advance ....Chariie's reply was illuminating "Tony, I would have done so but I never had my feet on the ground"

The return flight was made memorable by the appearance of a sign heralding the homecoming of Caldy tighthead prop Kev Green held aloft by his larger than life and irrepressable brother Maffa Green who (for some reason known only to Maffa) was fabulously dressed as a gigantic emerald green leprechaun !

I suspect the trip to Jersey will be equally enjoyable and will result in more Caldy fables

Always had a great time on the island even if the result was rarely in our favour. IIRC one year our firsts, seconds & vets all went over.

I can highly recommend The Lamplighter in Mulcaster Street, The Old Smugglers Inn in Le Mont du Ouaisne & for an excellent curry, Cafe Spice in Kensington Place.

Brizzer I think it is called L'Horizon..........booked by the management (My much younger wife)......she selected the hotel, the room and the view and kindly advised me that I would be paying for it.

In recent weeks she has been as giddy as Graham at the prospect of what she keeps telling me will be 4 exciting nights in Jersey.....she hasn't mentioned the rugby once.

I am slightly troubled that as of yet I haven't seen a payment appear on my credit card for either the room or the flights....

The Boss has good taste. She will enjoy the Spa treatments I’m sure. Whilst she is ‘indulged’, if the tide is out you can walk across the beach to the Smugglers Inn. Some very nice ales, log fire and some decent pug grub awaits….. warning, it is a long walk if the tide is up

Big Eddie , as has been stated, you’ll have an excellent time on the island, lots of lovely places.  Our trips have been excellent.
If you are in St Helier take a short stop at Liberation Square, if sunny, just take a moment.
I do recommend The Lamplighter, nice ambiance but do not look at the ‘ Whisky Board’.   Unless Caldy have won of course!
To you and your Caldy companions, have a great weekend.
Looking forward to welcoming you all on March 18th.

Fully agree with the Brizmeister real quality digs mate - I think someone told me the late Queen once stayed there. The Oyster Box is 250 meters west of your hotel and well worth a visit. I live at the top of the hill behind the hotel  and the beach in front is the regular haunt of my pair of Spaniels. Enjoy the tour mate I'm sure the laws of hospitality will ensure Jersey will only select their smaller forwards and save the really huge lads for Ealing next month!

P1003,

I appreciate your recommendations and particularly your suggestion that we take a moment in Liberation Square. I will research the history and whatever the weather we will most certainly take a moment in Liberation Square.

The suggestions and endorsements from contributors on RM are very welcome and are providing extra enjoyment for the Caldy supporters as they plan their time on Jersey.

Graham (who is Caldy's logistics guru) is beside himself with happiness........now the only thing he has to worry about is getting on the right flight (Graham did question why the airport was called New Jersey) ......and of course ensuring he isn't delayed going through Liverpool Airport's security

Corporalcarrot,

My wife will be delighted to hear that although I am somewhat alarmed at your information that the Oyster Box is only 250 metres away. I am already struggling with my much younger wife's expectation of '4 exciting nights in Jersey'...Oysters may only exacerbate my difficulties in this regard.

If it is your first visit to the Island I would recommend either hiring a car for a couple of days and touring all the sites (you can even get up to 40mph and be within the legal limits on one stretch of road oh and some of the lanes get very narrow so opt for a ford fiesta (or similar) rather than a Range Rover to avoid scratching the paintwork) - or make the most of the excellent bus service and tour the island that way. St Helier Town is lovely to walk around, many restaurants to chose from (Trip Advisor is handy to assist with options) and yes visit the Lamplighter (which is just around the corner from Liberation Square) and as suggested previously avoid viewing the Whisky / Armagnac boards unless you want to very quickly blow your Winter Heating allowance BE.

Ghanian Eagle I know you and I are of a similar vintage and I am always open to any suggestions as far as vintages are concerned. Thank you for the information, no one at Caldy will be short of recommendations re hostelries

I see that you are away at Juddians on 15 April .....could be a very important fixture for Sevenoaks.....hopefully you will not have particular need of the Inverdale walkway .... and you stay up!

Car already hired ......my much younger wife suggested that we went for 'small' rather than 'exceptionally large'. This wasn't because she was aware of the narrow roads or the 40mph speed limit .......her reasoning was explained to me 'Since I have been married to you I have have gotten very used to small everything'.....she actually said tiny rather than small but that would be splitting hairs.

Hiring a car in The Channel Islands brings back a memory of one of my dopier moments. Way back in the seventies Ampthill had a tour to Guernsey. Wanting to see the island, and also having a backup plan for having somewhere to sleep if some of our party got us thrown out of the hotel, a few of us hired a mini from a local garage. The lady at the garage was very helpful and asked me if she should stick a gallon of petrol in the tank. Absolutely not, I replied, fill her up. We want to do some serious sightseeing. At this point the lady should have reminded me that we were on an island. And a small island at that. But she didn’t. I soon learnt that the island was actually six miles long and three miles wide. What a Pratt.

I am of course hugely looking forward to a few days away with friends and my much younger wife. She insists I call her that in print so as to be sure if anyone meets the two of us they have an inkling she isn't my daughter. This isn't to spare my feelings but just so as to ensure that I don't take umbrage at being called Dad/Grandad or Old Timer

During lockdown I bought my much younger wife a new convertible for Christmas. There we were in the dealership, all masked up with the salesman trying to resell the vehicle to me even though I had already paid a substantial deposit and was only coming to pay the balance and pick the car up. I was irritated beyond belief and didn't attempt to disguise it. As I excused myself to allow the 4 cups of tepid car showroom coffee to work their way to freedom the salesman sought some solace from my much younger wife...."Your Father isn't much interested in cars is he"

I only learned about the insult after we drove away....it was too late to stop the purchase.

Perhaps I should change my name to Very Old Tiny Eddie my wife may vote for that

Cherub you must be a very nice person if you are Graham’s twin because he is one of the loveliest people I know. Barrie who has rarely been described as lovely frequently reminds us all how important this is with his voicemail message “it is nice to be important but it is far more important to be nice”.

Enjoyed the Caldy hip flask at TJ's the day I became a Caldy supporter.
15th will be huge local derby. Apparently TJ's have hired the local scouts tepee to accomodate the masses for lunch.

I am glad that we 'recruited' you that day GE.......Johnny Butler's hip flask clearly made an impression. I have to confess I also have a couple of 'second clubs' that I follow.....they happen to be Jersey and Ealing. 10 or so years ago both Jersey and Ealing were on the rise from relative obscurity and I figured that one or the other could possibly make it to the Premiership.

When Jersey and Ealing (along with Brian Ashton's Fylde from National 2 North) both made it into National 1 in about the 2010 season I remember posting a pre season prediction in the National 1 forum that Jersey, Ealing and Fylde would finish 1,2 and 3 that season......the guffaws and replies from the regular National 1 posters who supported Stourbridge etc were scathing.

I went to watch Jersey play against Sedgley Park at Park Lane. It wasn't a great game but Sedgley played out of their skins. It took a Jersey penalty to settle the game in Jersey's favour. From memory Matt Riley had a storming performance for Sedgley and Jersey's stand out player for me was a hulking bearded No. 8 who always made the hard yards count.

Is the 'Hulk' still at Jersey.....and more importantly will he be playing Saturday?

Good memory BE - here's the https://www.jerseyreds.je/match_report/sedgley-park-a-18-02-12/" rel="nofollow - MATCH REPORT

I missed that game, which was the last time the Reds visited the NW (until last October). The hulking no8 Nick 'Barrel' Trower won't be playing Sunday, he restricts himself to very occasional Vets outings these days, but is still pretty handy on a (reinforced) surfboard. A few others are also in the 'very occasional Vets' category but I think the only one still playing properly is hooker Dave Felton (for the amateur JRFC side). Guy Thompson retired last May having returned here from a successful Premiership career. Imagine quite a few of the side may attend this w/e...

Some familiar names in those line ups including prop Ben Evans for Jersey- played a few games for Wales and for Sedgley the one and only Louis McGowan who was a force for Caldy in the next few seasons. It is a pity that the Hulk won't figure for Jersey on Saturday he was a helluva player that day. Probably way too small to get into Jersey's current pack.

Myself and my much younger wife are just going through final preparations ahead of our lunchtime flight to Jersey. It is always a stressful time. MMYW vets everything I am taking and proposing to wear over the long weekend and firmly vetos my chosen colour combinations, any garment with the odd hole in it and any item of clothing that is more than 10 years old. 'Naked in Jersey' could be a new reality series.

We are travelling with the Wylies and the delightful April. MMYW has also banned me taking the 'funnel' that Phil Wylie and I constructed out of various bits of plumbing relieved from the shower block in Oldham Rugby club. Some 15 years ago this hastily constructed 'funnel' gave Caldy's 2nd xv a joyous mini bus journey back from Oldham to the Wirral .........it is the perfect size for a short 5 day tour and would have been fun for all the passengers on today's EasyJet flight.......

To be honest there was little to no warning on the 4 pack of Bombay Bad Boy that I smuggled into L'Horizon. There was a caveat about alcohol and Bombay Bad Boy potentially causing an accumulation of gas in the alimentary canal but that passed me by as I thought it would only apply if one was in Venice.

There is always a cause and effect and I didn't expect a spark from MMYW's stilettos to set off such a chain reaction. MMYW did pass an early morning remark that she could smell something untoward ....I should have heeded the warning.

Apart from this explosive start to the day we have all settled into our digs at L'Horizon and other hostelries on the island. Carol who is a member of the Blue T**ts swimming club has been asking around about the best time to swim in St Brelade's Bay and the delightful April has been frolicking in the Jacuzzi.

Following the Ravers doesn't get much better than this

In the reverse fixture at the Paton Field Stadium Jersey's big boys didn't come on until the second half, what further perils await the diminutive Ravers?

Just make them run for the full 80, they will soon need to breathe via their alimentary canal.

The most interesting names on the Jersey bench are the two young half backs who I can't wait to see play together ideally down the slope in the second half.

I think that all 3 backs selected for the bench are immensely exciting.
This is a very strong 23 that Jersey are putting out and if Caldy win, by George, they will have deserved it.
Best of luck to all teams and no injuries please!!

There is a local year-round swimming group in Jersey called the Blue T*ts - the second word being a reference to the frontal chest area of swimmers' bodies...

I have never heard of the Blue T**ts - it sounds as if that may relate to more, ahem, nether regions, but I'm not sure I want to go there.

The West Kirby swim club is just a little more hard core than those south of Watford….. hence the Blue T**ts

Yes an enjoyable warm-up BE, in which the general consensus seemed to be that there will be 3-400 from Caldy in attendance tomorrow, altho' I did hear an estimate of 500 from one attendee.

The only bad news related to the Caldy 2nd XV game (KO 1.30) in which the Ravers have the chance to win their league - it was hoped to screen this in the Pav but apparently an issue with Apple TV (don't ask me the details) may scupper this.

But I trust the travelling hordes won't be too disappointed about this - they seemed to be in very good 'early-tour' form - let's hope that doesn't spill over into 'peaking-too-early' by the time they are turfed out of Mimosa and/or the Royal Yacht nightclubs at 0200 on match-day...

Brizzer,

Having spent an hour or two yesterday afternoon in the Lamplighter I am concerned that the Caldy players could have drifted in there inadvertently.

The clientele and the manager of the Lamplighter all seemed to be rugby people and very used to drinking challenges and other whimsical rugby practices involving small cigar stubs and clenched buttocks.

Most of the Ravers would not be able to resist such a challenge. I now have a sense of foreboding about today.

Paid scant attention…….despite MMYW also admonishing me in advance. The manager of the Lamplighter regaled us with stories of passing out after downing 6 pints of cider and black. However he blanched at the Wyllies’ tales of certain eating challenges that involved the clubhouse urinals….

Obviously he wasn’t a Raver

Last three hours hours on Jersey for this trip. Hugely enjoyable 5 days on Jersey apart from 80 minutes on Saturday ........but if we disregard the score most of that was thrilling to watch as well. I understand from Mark and Bish that they intend bringing Caldy's senior colts along next season......should be able to break the 500 mark.

Thank you Jersey for great hospitality at your rugby club and in your hostelries and especially at the very welcoming and brilliantly positioned L'Horizon hotel.

You are very welcome BE. It was a pleasure to meet all of those who travelled over, sadly far too many to meet everyone, but those that I did manage to say hello to were an absolute delight. A real credit to your great club.
Please pass on my best to your MYW, you are punching well above there mate!!
Safe travels home and hopefully acquaintances can be renewed next season.

Good to see that on the back of Caldy's maiden voyage to the Island, they are making another one, with the amateur Jersey RFC side hosting Caldy 2nds for a late-season friendly on Sat 22nd. Both sides won their respective leagues this season, with the hosts getting ready for the annual Siam Cup derby game against Guernsey two weeks later.

11am kick off which seems ideal for a tour game - they should be finished in good time for a decent lunch. Are there any other games that day?
