Yorkshire Carnegie 0  v 5 Nottingham  - Leeds targetting this one! but Nottingham by over 30
Doncaster 1  v 4 London Scottish  - Knights still struggling, a real arm wrestle
Bedford 4 v 1 Jersey - Home advantage
Coventry 1 v 4 Cornish Pirates - Cov mis firing and CP ambitious
Ealing 5  v 0 Hartpury College  - Men v boys!
Newcastle 5 v 0 Ampthill - Home advantage

Predictions:
Yorkshire Carnegie 1 v 5 Nottingham - I think Carnegie could get another point on the board in this game but I don't think they'll get their first win.
Doncaster 4 v 1 London Scottish - this will be very tight I think but much like they did against Nottingham I think Doncaster will get over the line.
Bedford 4 v 1 Jersey - A tight one but an improved Bedford to win at home.
Coventry 1 v 5 Cornish Pirates - got to go with form. Cov are too inconsistent, Pirates on a roll.
Ealing 5 v 2 Hartpury College - I think this could be a very high-scoring game on that pitch. Ealing to edge it but HC will make them work very hard for it.
Newcastle 5 v 0 Ampthill - Falcons on their home patch far too strong I'm afraid.

Yorkshire Carnegie 0-5 Nottingham - I think the opposition target YC now and hunt the full 5 points. And I think there will be no change this week.
Doncaster 4-1 London Scottish - LS are improving but I think Donny will bounce back after last week's defeat.
Bedford 5-2 Jersey - Bedford are finding their feet and I think this will be a high scoring entertaining game.
Coventry 1-4 Cornish Pirates - This is a bold prediction but I feel not all is happy in the Coventry camp.
Ealing 5- 0 Hartpury College - A comfortable home win, methinks.
Newcastle 0-5 Ampthill - Oh! Sorry. Misprint.
Newcastle 5-1 Ampthill - The Newcastle machine will most likely score more than four tries. But it is not beyond Ampthill to do the same, as they did at Ealing a couple of weeks ago.

Yorkshire Carnegie 1 v 5 Nottingham YC to sneak a BP
Doncaster Knights 4 v 1 London Scottish - Donny starting to find form?
Bedford 4 v 1 Jersey - could depend on the weather
Coventry 1 v 4 Cornish Pirates - Pirates to grind it out
Ealing Trailfinders 5 v 0 Hartpury College - Will be close for 50 then bench makes impact both ways
Newcastle Falcons 5 v 0 Ampthill - Stuttering but still picking up winning BPs at home

Yorkshire Carnegie 0 v 5 Nottingham Leeds jettisoned DoR and was abandoned by Head Coach. Can't see that improving form.
Doncaster Knights 4 v 1 London Scottish - Doncaster to squeeze out a win at home.
Bedford 4 v 1 Jersey - Watched the live stream on Sunday, and Bedford seem to be finding their identity this season as a much more 'grind it out' squad than in previous years. I think that is just enough to get them over the line at home.
Coventry 4 v 1 Cornish Pirates - Coventry stung by two close losses comes out motivated and beats Pirates in a close game.
Ealing Trailfinders 4 v 1 Hartpury College - Ealing with a weird line up, will barely scrape a win at home.
Newcastle Falcons 5 v 0 Ampthill - Reverse fixture could be tricky, but I can only see one way traffic in Newcastle this weekend.

Yorkshire Carnegie 0  v 5 Nottingham
Half tempted to go 1-4 but I just cant see Carnegie getting close or scoring more than two tries

Doncaster 1  v 4 London Scottish
Donny have some good players, but pack are a bit portly and knocking on a bit. Expects Scots to take it.

Bedford 1 - Jersey 4
Tight encounter, think Reds will sneak it though.. 14-20

Coventry 1 v 5 Cornish Pirates
Cov not good enough to trouble Pirates, though could still score 4 tries

Ealing 5  v 0 Hartpury College
Banker 5 points for Ealing. 43-14

Newcastle 5 v 0 Ampthill
Can see A's scoring a couple, but no more. Falcons have been a bit off-colour though, so who knows?

By knocking on a bit you mean Mr Quigley (39) and possibly Mr Challinor (34)

By portly you mean Mr Quigley big Joe is just that ‘BIG’

The catch is he (Mr Quigley) can still out scrummage most in this league and fancies another season at it next year.....

CQ is 38 according to https://www.drfc.co.uk/squad/colin-quigley/" rel="nofollow - this page (which also shows him ball-in-hand, sprinting away from one of Jersey's quickest players! LOL)

to be fair despite their size i thought they were all comfortable with ball in hand - some sharp passing skills throughout the pack

Leeds 2-2 Nottingham - Could go either way - settled by a missed kick?

Knights 4-1 Scottish - Two decent teams I just go with home advantage - great pitch & pies enjoy the rugby

Bedford 2-5 Jersey - Lots of tries in this one. I was due to miss this one but a late change plans means I am hoping to see a cracking open game.

Coventry 1-4 Cornish Pirates - Cov at home with the better squad and great support but Pirates very well managed this season to take it by a handful of points

Ealing Trailfinders 4-1 Hartpury College - Could go either way

Newcastle Falcons 1-4 Ampthill - Someone need to beat Falcons who are the best team in the league but imo not by that much so howay Amps.

Yorkshire Carnegie 1 v 5 Nottingham ... I quite fancy YC to get a TBP in this one following the way that they played in Jersey. The defence is poor, but with the ball they do have teeth, especially from the maul. Outside of that, Nottingham fill yer boots

Doncaster Knights 4 v 1 London Scottish ... no idea on this one. Probably the two most inconsistent sides in the league. It really could be anything, but I will go for a hard fought, tight home win.

Bedford 2 v 5 Jersey ... Bedford on the up. Jersey keep butchering gilt edged scoring chances. However, I think that this could be another classic. Bedford will move the ball and that will leave space for the quick back 3 of the Reds. A thriller with everything except Michael Jackson!!

Coventry 1 v 4 Cornish Pirates ... Cov are good at home and will keep this tight, but there is a tenacity about Pirates this season. I fancy them to stay 2nd with a good away win.

Ealing Trailfinders 4 v 0 Hartpury College ... Hartpury do not concede too much, but they don't get over the white wash too much either. A game of attrition which Ealing will win comfortably, but may need the boot to secure the points.

Newcastle Falcons 5 v 1 Ampthill ... Ampthill will give this a right old go (why wouldn't they?), but I think that attacking flair will be at the expense of leaving big gaps that the Falcons will exploit. Lots of tries, most going to the hosts (9 tries to 4)

Any guidance on a rugby friendly pub near Bedford Station which will have the Ireland v Scotland match on TV would be appreciated.

A reliable source tells me perhaps The Grafton Hotel  about  300 yards on the  corner turning right out of the station.  Failing that it looks like the high street pubs, particularly The Brew House at the  Goldington Road end, but that's not exactly near the  station ,Maybe someone else might know of more Look forward to seeing the Jersey Boys 👍🍺

Pilgrims Progress (Weatherspoons) Midland Road or The Ship in St Cuthbert's Street may be showing it!

Evidently the Grafton has 7 screens so you could maybe check as you arrive in Bedford.  Cheers  G J.

It may be worth checking with the club too as they usually show the games on the big screen in the marquis after the match. A lot of the pubs near the station are quite football centric!

I had to laugh at this post CPK.  We have a supporter who stands with us who is the dead spit of (a younger) CQ.  Every time CQ bores in at a scrum he shouts ‘behave yourself dad’. Big smile

Bedford will be showing both opening Six Nations matches. The clashes between Wales v Italy (KO 14:15) and Ireland v Scotland (KO 16:45) will be shown live around the ground, including on the big screen in the Scrum Bar.

Here goes for this weekend:

Yorkshire Carnegie 0 - 5 Nottingham - still awaiting the Carnegie revival. Not happening tonight.
Doncaster Knights 1 - 4 London Scottish, tight game but think the Exiles pack power will prevail.
Bedford 1 - 4 Jersey Reds, another too close to call, think the Reds will just do enough to take this.
Coventry 2 - 4 Cornish Pirates , decent home record for Cov this season, but Cornish might dig out the win.
Ealing TF 5 - 0 Hartpury - Ealing to have too much power for whoever turns up for Hartpury.
Newcastle Falcons 5 - 0 - David to slay Goliath? Not this weekend.

Have a super rugby weekend, club, international’s or whatever level you prefer to watch.

Ealing Trailfinders team to play Hartpury on Saturday 1st February at Trailfinders Sports Club: Huh? We played really well last Friday, and then 7 changes to the squad. I understand that Tommy Bell took a knock, but why switch out Elijah Niko from 14, where his power was opening up all kinds of room in the center of the field? I know that Kieren Murphy is also injured, but where is Jordan Els (and why'd he shave his beard)? Also, after a brilliant display, Jordan Burns disappears, and he was fit as a fiddle coming off the field last week. I don't understand this lineup at all, and I'm going to go change my prediction. As a bonus, we seem to have picked up Levi Davis from Bath for the week? Anyhow, Alun Walker is tough as nails to be in the line up this week - I watched him throw himself onto a loose ball even with an arm that was dangling limply. He got splattered, but stopped an otherwise clean break.

15 Peter Lydon 14 Pat Howard 13 Jack Tovey 12 Harry Sloan 11 Reon Joseph 10 Craig Willis 9 Nathan Fowles 1 Will Davis 2 Alun Walker 3 Elliot Millar Mills 4 Ben West 5 James Cannon 6 Shane Buckley 7 Jordy Reid 8 Rayn Smid ©

Replacements:

16 Matt Cornish 17 Jake Ellwood 18 George Davis 19 Sam Dickinson 20 Adam Korczyk 21 Craig Hampson 22 Steven Shingler 23 Levi Davis

Peter Lydon back from Bedford ! I have not seen Jack Tovey since Rosslyn Park game, pre season  . It is good to see Nathan Fowles playing , he is a very experienced scrum half and really bosses the pack around . You could see him directing forwards around the break down against London Scottish.

Happy to see Peter back, sad it had to be because of injury. With Both Bell and Johnston out Ealing has had to bring in a loanee 15, so I would think they would need to get a lot healthier...

Good to see YC getting what they deserve - nothing!

Hope they haven't messed the pitch up for the proper game at Headingly!

So does Peter Lydon go back to Bedford once Tommy Bell is fit again?
Happy to see Peter back, sad it had to be because of injury. With Both Bell and Johnston out Ealing has had to bring in a loanee 15, so I would think they would need to get a lot healthier...
Oh the luxury of 3 per position!Confused, can we have Pete back ASAP pretty please? Big smile

Ealing 26 (BP) - Hartpury 0. Three solid, patient tries from Ealing and a Penalty try on a Rolling Maul. Very windy conditions, Ealing gets the wind in the second half. Small crowd, maybe 600.

Nottingham played well last night, but still not at their best.
I agree with previous post that Leeds are getting what they deserve, but spare a thought for the players who are victims of others failures.
As to the pitch, there are tufts of grass on a sandpit. League starts this weekend. God help them. Very poor.

At the Bedford vs Jersey game..... I think Bedford need to work on the referee liaison........ dominated the scrum all game, pushed Jersey off their own put in twice.... yet have been penalised all game.....

After about a million penalties against Pirates they lose 28-23. Ref sounded like a bit of a homer. I wasn't there so won't comment on much. Our third loss of the season has been on the horizon for a while now. Disappointed but not surprised.
Well done Cov.

‘3rd choice full-back’ Pete Lydon pulled back from loan to Bedford with a point to prove. Boy, did he prove it! Man of the match performance including a try and several assists, rock solid in defence (as was the whole team for the first time this season) and even managed a few accurate passes and off-loads (not his strong point!) He provides a level of defensive stability that has been sorely lacking all season, surely he must keep his place.

Well done Cov.

To the contrary,. We always seem to get in the wrong side of this ref, as we did again and again in the first half today. Thankfully our discipline improved and with it the performance to come away with a win. Not before falling foul of the ref again towards the end of the game. Entertaining match... very pleased to say we came out on the winning side with 5 points.

Well done Cov.

I was there so may be able to enlighten you...
Pirates were awarded plenty of penalties until Cov finally woke up and started to dominate the scrum and inevitably gain penalties of their own.  Two yellows for cynical offences were also deserved as we started to threaten in attack.
The Pirates supporter who spent the entire second half shouting at the ref and his ARs wasn't particularly a credit to your club but was nonetheless entertaining in his own way.
A well-contested game that could have gone either way.

Short of it is though we perhaps adapted to the ref better today, that's rarely been the case this season...

Second this. Plus the spinning clearing kick he made when he scooped up a loose ball late in the second half must have went 40 meters. I can't even explain how amazing that kick was.

I gather from Rowland Winter’s CWR radio interview after the game that the final penalty count was about twice as many against the CPs as against Coventry, but certainly in the first quarter it was the other way around.
The nose-high off-the-ball tackle on David Halaifanoa, as he chased his own grubber kick could have resulted in a red on other occasions.

C P were to some extent their own worst enemies. As an example, on three consecutive set pieces the Broomfield side AR shouted at the number 14 to move the backs line back, and was ignored. At a break in play he went onto the pitch and spoke to the number 14. Next set piece, when they crept forward again and ignored his shouted instruction the referee was warned and watching, and CP were penalised.

I noticed the same Nick and pointed out to the AR (politely) that the Cornish backs had totally ignored him yet weren't penalised.  The 14 was in line with the AR, the rest of the backs were a metre in front.

Really pleased with the Blues win this afternoon. Great to see them sticking to it and showing some real passion to come back and win the game.

Worst news of the afternoon....... that Peter Lydon stormed it with Ealing this afternoon. Fair play to him, would be pleased - but now not expecting it - to see him back at Goldington Road.

Westcoaster, I was there, pretty even game , your 9 & 10 caused havoc all afternoon, they look really dangerous. Jersey kicking downhill and with a strong following wind 1st half scored their tries from turnover balls, 1 knock on and a blocked 22 drop out, went 5-18 up. We Scored 3 well taken tries, one from a superb kick through from Hooley, a dart over from a ruck on your line by our scrum half and a crash over from our no.4 after some consistent pressure right on 1/2 time. HT was 17-18.
Second half was scoreless for about the first 20mins, cagey stuff, looking for the other side to make a mistake, then a lovely counter attack from  jersey with an equally brilliantly weighted kick through resulted in a try for Jersey. A pen from the 10m line got us back to 20-25, a lot of pressure from Bedford in the last 15 was well defended, with a coule of dangerous breaks we managed to break up. A sequence of pens resulted in a kick brilliantly placed into the 5m area from a good distance out, lots of pressure, more penalties, scrum in front of the posts, our 8 broke off the back and crashed over. Ran the clock down taking the conversion to win, I think Bedford deserved it, I'd love to know the penalty count as Jersey seemed to constantly giving them away, should have had a yellow card for a knockdown in the first half and another for persistent infringement in the 2nd, but it was a great game to watch.

What Bluepip said. 100%. A game that the Reds should have won, but the better team won it on the day.
Now! The result was correct ok! However, the off side decision by the RA to calm Jersey off side was a joke.
Dreadful decision, however the kick to the corner in the build up was pure genius. I can’t deny that the better team won today. It is great to have Bedford back

Bedford were their usual selfs... (which was good to see after the early part of the season), scoring good tries but then making mad mistakes in their own 22 to gift most of Jerseys points to them on a plate in the first half. Jersey controlled the second half. Bedford dominated the scrum but got penalised all game. What amazed me was that Jerseys defence came with a plan to drift wide to stop Bedfords obvious width..... if Bedfords 10 or 12 looked up they never had any defence in front of them!!! Jersey committed 3 intentional knock ons with no cards....
I think Jersey switched off, 3 times in the last few minutes they were gifted possession and rather than stick it up their jumper they kept box kicking it back to Bedford. With 5 minutes to go Bedford remembered they were playing down hill with the wind and used it to get field position. A strange game with neither team in control all game, but both teams benefitting from the other switching off.
I was bemused with the Jersey tactic of the front row constantly taking a knee and the swarm of water boys coming on every breakdown from the 30 minute onwards and then moaning about the 6 minutes of injury time at the end. Could have been 16 minutes. Refs need to do more to stop the constant army of people coming onto the pitch every 5 minutes.....

Sounds a close game , thanks guys.
Bedfordian , i couldn't agree more. The swarm of "waterboys" (and assistant coaches) coming on whenever theres some break in play is an embarrassment. The refs need to be far firmer. Players don't need all this water brought on - its a farce which the games administrators should put a stop to. The only time it should be legitimate is when a conversion is being taken.

A fair accurate account, fancy reporting for The Rugby Paper?  Luke Jarmyn saw Greg Dyer score and make it 25  17 to Jersey at half time!! I recall it being 18  17 to them.  On a separate note Atkinson had a monster game, with Onojaife getting more involved,  seems to be relishing the task more recently.   I was going to compare the last couple of referees at Goldington Road but I'd better not.

Interesting, re the pitch - 2 super league matches on it today.

Watched a RL friendly the other week when the pitch looked very good (on tv) - obviously a couple of union games has ruined it.

A few further thoughts from Vallis Way yesterday:

1. I was completely wrong about the squad selection being weak. I've always been a big Lydon fan, but otherwise I was very leary of the changes, however Nathan Fowler, the changed props and Sloane/Tovey/Howard in midfield proved me wrong. Almost certainly the most impressive depth I've seen at Ealing.

2. Trailfinders are still really struggling to find an audience. It was a bit windy, but really as nice a February day as one could expect, but only about 600 fans turned out for ET. Of these, a good chunk were actually neutrals who had been brought in as part of a UK experience package for Americans that I think was sold through Trailfinders (the travel business). Full points to Mike Gooley for doing everything possible to increase the gate though. I've invited, friends, neighbours and office mates, and even free tickets are rarely enough to get someone interested. Not sure what they can do.

3. On the same topic, Hartpury must have close to zero travelling support. I would guess no more than 25 to 30 people turned out for them. Yet another reason that their presence is to the league's detriment. Rotherham in their final season must have brought down a full coach-load.

4. I'm very hopeful that Ealing get a bit more of Levi Davis' time. He was electric coming on in the final quarter. No idea how we got use of him this weekend, but the swiftness of his feet was amazing.

5. Defense - As someone else mentioned, Peter Lydon made a huge difference in the defensive effort. He got low and took down a couple large ball carriers rampaging up the middle which would have gotten by at least one of our injured 15s...Thanks to this effort, Ealing now has (at least temporarily) the best points difference, which is good as they've scored well over a hundred points more than the next closest team.

Here we are. Halfway through the season. And Ampthill lie a very healthy sixth in the table.About five or six places higher than most level headed Ampthill (and other) supporters hoped for last September. And today they were only outscored by six tries to five away to Newcastle Falcons. I for one would like to say well done to the current squad and coaching team for making an old man very happy.

This is an excellent summary. I was also there and have no complaints about the result. Both sides under-performed and made errors which lead to a really competitive match. Jersey had this game done & dusted around the hour mark when they subbed their hooker just after a wonderful pen put them on the Blues 5m line whilst winning by two scores. A real bent throw properly called by the ref who had a good match imo allowed Blues to clear and Jersey always looked like losing after that with a scrum half on the wing. If the game had lasted another 5 minutes I don't think Jersey would have got out of their own half - Blues finished strongly but were never great - just good enough to win. Great hospitality by Blues fans by the lad behind the posts at the bottom of the hill in the first half and the lad from Flitwick who got me back to the station after the match. Great club Blues but I wish they kicked off at 2.30pm - when they play Jersey. The last flight had closed but not left when I got to Gatwick and great wifi on the train allowed me to see Nick Haining in the Scotland game. I disagree with Bedfordian about scrums - the referee gave the penalties because the starting Jersey Tight Head (who imo is the best Non Falcons tight head in the league) was dominant and gave the starting Blues loose head a real working over - but I support Jersey so could easily be wrong.

From a couple of hundred miles away (Paris - don't ask!) it doesn't seem like the Reds are getting much credit for their contribution to an exciting game. You'd think a side who led for 72 mins & were level for another 4 might have been slightly unfortunate, but equally I defer to those who were present....

To be honest Islander, I think that both sides contributed to a good encounter. Certainly Jersey can play better, but when you consider how many injuries we have and then others getting injured during the game to leave 3 or 4 of the backs playing totally out of position, it is to their absolute credit that the game finished so close.

Not heard of this one before, but was told by one of the Jersey players. It seemed as though there was still a bit of time left on the clock when the final try was scored. The ref told the kicker that if he waited for 1 min 20 he would blow the final whistle after he kicked. The ref even let him know when time was up. I know that you can ask how long left, but not heard of the ref volunteering the info. The boys were pretty upset with him.

Finishing on a positive note, I thought that Homer looked more dangerous covering the full back position for kicks then he did as a 9, he had a great game, but the Bedford 14 & 15 were outstanding IMHO.
Bring on 2nd May.
