The Yorkshire Regiment Trophy was introduced at the start of the 2012-13 season when all three Yorkshire sides were competing against each other in the Championship. The Yorkshire Regiment Trophy was approved by the RFU Championship Clubs Committee as a venture to aid the development of rugby union in the North of England. The Yorkshire Regiment kindly collaborated with the clubs as a means of strengthening the Yorkshire connection. The six meetings between the three sides each season in the Greene King IPA Championship not only earn vital league points but are also entered into a Yorkshire mini league with the top team being presented with the Yorkshire Regiment Trophy once all the games are completed.

The Yorkshire Regiment Cup is a schoolboy association football competition. The Trophy was set up for the then three Championship clubs in Yorkshire. I don’t think Doncaster have ever won it. The next season may be our best chance 😉🤡😉 Actually scrap that we must have won it this season!!

Km8 seasons ago that this ightandday, great historical resume, many thanks. I doesn't seem like 8 seasons ago that this great three way battle first appeared. And am I right that Leeds have won it the most times? But Knights are now only survivor in Championship, great for Donny! I suppose the Council of the Yorkshire Regiment must now be asked about the Trophy's future (a Regiment whose predecessors produced so many rugby Internationals (did the Dukes have 5 in their battalion side a few years ago)? And yes Knightandday, surely Knights must have won the Trophy for 2019/20?

Islander, I found your account of the Yorkshire Regiment's Cup very interesting especially when you mentioned the three Yorkshire regiments which form the present Yorkshire Regiment. Just in passing may I mention a fourth Yorkshire regiment, namely the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, the KOYLI's, who were formed in 1881. In 1968 they merged with the Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry and the King's Shropshire Light Infantry to form a new regiment, The Light Infantry. This regiment in turn merged with the Devon and Dorset's, the Royal Gloucester's, the Berkshire and Wiltshire's and the Royal Green Jackets in 2007 to become The Rifles. The Regimental Depot of the KOYLI's was in Pontefract. The Duke's certainly had a very good rugby pedigree and I well remember one of their members, Brian Saville a very good centre or off-half, who played for Hull FC in the late 1950's whilst also playing for the Dukes's in Army rugby. ------------- What's with you Boo-Boo |

Yogi, how very interesting indeed. I 'think' 2 Dukes serving officers, Dennis Shuttleworth and Mike Hardy, both played together for England in the early 1950's probably with Jeff Butterfield who was, I believe, an RAEC attached SNCO? Mike Campbell-Lamerton, Scotland and Lions, would possibly have been a little later. Much more recently was Rodber in the Howards? Not maybe quite equalling the Leicesters whose Captain Kendrew, later Major General, captained England whilst serving as Adjutant! Great days!

Yes, Tim Rodber served with the Green Howard’s - his aunt who I knew was always very proud to announce she was his aunt and that he was a Captain in the Green Howard’s and played for England ------------- Onward and Upwards C'mon Donny! |
