Nottingham 5 - 0 London Scottish - dead cert Pirates 5 - 2 Bedford - fixture of the week Richmond 2 - 2 Ampthill - difficult to call Hartpury 2 - 5 Doncaster - think this could be a battle royale Ealing 5 - 0 Jersey - I cannot see Jersey getting any points on the league table from this game but hope they prove me completely wrong.

Not sure what impact the Premiership Cup will have on this weekās line-ups. We can expect a few of our Chiefs D/R forwards to have been recalled and I assume that some of the Bluesā phalanx of Saints D/R/s will be travelling back up the M1 instead of setting out for the delights of an Autumnal Penwith.

Nottingham 5-0 London Scottish. I cannot see this being anything other than a home banker. Cornish Pirates 4-1 Bedford. This is a tricky one and I think the weather will play a big part. If the ball is wet, then the Pirates will wear the Bedford pack down. But if it remains dry, the dangerous Bedford backs might make it a close game. Richmond 1-4 Ampthill. I see this being a very close game but I am hoping Ampthill will be fresh and lean after two weeks off to secure the win. Hartpury 1-4 Doncaster. Almost impossible to call and will depend on which Hartpury team turns up, but I think the full-time professionals at Doncaster will rule the day. Ealing 5-0 Jersey. Ealing have now settled and anything at their own ground should be a five point banker.

Nottingham 5 - 1 London Scottish - Scottish were far more competent in their last outing but I cant forget the century Ealing put on them. Pirates 5 - 0 Bedford - Not the result I want due to the table, but Pirates too good at home. Richmond 4 - 1 Ampthill - Richmond unlikely to be as affected by the Prem cup "competition". Hartpury 1 - 4 Doncaster - Hartpury falling off the pace a bit as Donny gains form. Ealing 5 - 0 Jersey - Ealing getting bolstered by more Kiwi signing showing up. I wxpect them to hold hime serve.

Nottingham 4-1 London Scottish - Exiles improving but Notts to win by 4-5 points Pirates 5 - 0 Blues - At home Pirates forwards to dominate Richmond 4 - 1 Ampthill - Should be a cracking close game but at home Mond by a handful of points Pury 1 - 4 Donny - This could go either way but I fancy Donny to just edge it. Ealing 1-4 Jersey - Ealing obvious favourites but Jersey defence & forwards should give them the best contest since their loss to Pirates so I hope for an away win. In my dreams I see a tight game with GT coming off the bench to score a winning try in the last few minutes. I predict 4 yellow cards (2 each side) and expect a 6-2 split on the Jersey bench and quality singing on the way back to Heathrow.

Bedford Blues starting XV: 15. Rich Lane (C), 14. Pat Tapley, 13. Jamie Elliott, 12. Will Maisey, 11. Dean Adamson, 10. Louis Grimoldby, 9. Alex Day; 1. Corrie Barrett, 2. Jack Hughes, 3. Ed Prowse, 4. Jordan Onojaife, 5. Alex Woolford, 6. Luke Frost, 7. Bailey Ransom, 8. Tui Uru Bedford Blues Replacements: 16. Josh Pieterse, 17. Joey Conway, 18. Osman Dimen, 19. Oli Stedman, 20. Joe Atkinson, 21. Jake Garside, 22. Matt Worley, 23. Andre Robson
As expected, practically none of the Saints players available. We have 3 hookers injured atm so with Marshall on Saints duty there is no hooker on the bench and weāll be hoping Hughes does the 80. A couple of odd selections as weāve decided to play a tighthead at loosehead and I canāt fathom why Atkinson is on the bench. Itās not a very mobile back row with 2nd rows playing 6 and a converted 2nd row at 7.

That doesn't look positive for the Blues when they are going up against one of the most competitive teams in the league.
What happens if an injury occurs to your hooker - uncontested scrums? I thought Teams had to field experienced front row players on the bench? Something about limiting the potential for inexperienced players being injured....

Ealing side to face Jersey - Quite a lot of continuity here, which I'm always a fan of. A bit surprised to see Northcote-Green starting. I thought that Digby was excellent at 6, but he did seem to be quite sore in the last mach, so perhaps injured. Also, I liked Gordon at 12. Bench with 6 forwards and 2 backs, so a bit risky there again. I suspect that Ealing will still win.
1. James Gibbons 2. Shaun Malton 3. Lewis Thiede 4. Bobby De Wee 5. James Cannon 6. Max Northcote-Green 7. Simon Uzokwe 8. Rayn Smid 9. Craig Hampson 10. Steven Shingler 11. Luke Daniels 12. Reuben Bird-Tulloch 13. Max Bodilly 14. Charlie Walker 15. David Johnston
Replacements
16. Jan-Henning Campher 17. Dylan Smith 18. Kyle Whyte 19. Simon Linsell 20. Len Massyn 21. Jordan Burns 22. Craig Willis 23. Malon Al-Jiboori

We have 3 props on the bench and Iām guessing Josh Pieterse who is listed at 16 can cover hooker in an emergency. We had one other game where Hughes was our only available hooker and he played the 80 with Pieterse an unused sub at 16.
Looking at saints preview, Reece Marshall isnāt actually playing and is listed under the injured players so presumably picked up an injury last week in Prem Cup. So weāve got a bit of a crisis at hooker with 4 injured.

The Knights are taking this one seriously - they have travelled down today to stop in a Hotel so that they are refreshed and ready to play tomorrow. I fancy Knights will still take this one but it will be quite a battle I suspect - although I will be very happy if we have a runaway victory....

Correct about Tom Pittman KB, fly-half who signed for us in Sept from Scottish Super 6 side Boroughmuir Bears...
Rory Pitman is back in Wales but no longer playing, a short burst of Google research reveals:

Pretty awful referring decision to start the Bedford Pirates game. Bedford kick through and tackle pirates just in front of their try line. Ball comes loose, Bedford think theyāve scored, ref gives goal line drop out. Itās either a Bedford try or a 5m scrum as we werenāt held up and they clearly fielded the ball before the goal line.
First scrum after and pirates demolish the blues scrum earning 3 points. Doesnāt bode well for rest of gameā¦

HT Pirates (2 tries) 18 - 24 (BP) Blues
Blues have had 1 yellow and a red and Pirates 1 yellow.
Pirates no. 1 play for their backs so far is to join the maul from which 2 out of 3 attempts have resulted in tries.
Blues have scored 2 tries from runs and chips through from 50m, a mess of a 22m drop out from Pirates and then a sidestepping run from Adamson.

Perhaps if Bedford could actually defend the maul then all the other teams wouldn't use it against you. Pirates have scored plenty of excellent tries this season. Just becuase we're not playing champagne rugby every week doesn't mean we're boring to watch. Very harsh comments I think.

Fair comment Hoffee, no disrespect intended, 1st time Iāve seen you play this season and my observations of that game. Look forward to seeing CPās get try of the week from open play š

| Great 5 points for Ealing and they will be all the better long term for a match when they had to work for the win.

I donāt know who Westlake is but would point out that the Blues posters have been saying all season that your pack are wobbly and the back 3 are dangerous. I think itās reasonable to expect that our coaches would have done some research.Iāll settle for the 5 points thanks. |
Wedlake (canāt help the phone changing the name but pretty close to Westlake donāt you think?).
The pack hasnāt actually been that bad in the scum and maul had become better. One change the last couple of weeks was losing 2 more experienced Saints props.
We arenāt criticising Pirates game play, just a comment that Pirates have never played that way, it has been a 15 man team effort of a combination of scrum, maul, backs move, enterprising play and not get a penalty and get the backs to pile in.
The game changer was from the maul 5m out Blues lost the ball over the line.
With 7 man maul for over a half and 3 props and no 2nd rows on the pitch at one stage of course the scrum and maul was going to be an area to target. Referee allowed pirates hit and drive early on the scrum most of the time, but if you can get away with it then you keep doing it.

Letās move onto Ampthill. What a cracking away win at Richmond today. In recent games against two top sides, Jersey and Doncaster, they have thrown away two wins in the very last minutes of each game. But not today. From being down 24-8 at one stage, they have fought back against a rejuvenated Richmond and banked another precious 5 points. They are certainly starting to hold their own in this division. Good on them.

Cheers, Member728, it is always good to read feedback from supporters who were there. Ampthill have been blessed of late with good kicking fly halves. And I was very mindful before yesterdayās game of Richmondās terrific recent result at Bedford.
I had to smile yesterday morning though. Living in Yorkshire, when I mentioned to my wife that Ampthill were playing away at Richmond, she wondered why I wasnāt popping over to near Catterick on the A1 to watch the gameā¦.

I thought that Jersey were exceptionally competitive. They are so much more than a ' big pack ' The outstanding player was the Jersey full back, Brendan Owen. His dominance under the repeated high ball was outstanding. I was fortunate to be seated next to Cliff Chipperfield the Jersey Reds President at the pre match lunch. His enthusiasm and commitment to the Reds was clearly evident and he said that he knew that Jersey would compete and give Ealing a tough game, he was right and it could have easily gone the other way in Jerseys favour.

The best match Iāve seen between two proper āChampionshipā (I.e. not relegated Premiership) sides in many years. Whilst I didnāt expect an armchair ride for Ealing, I certainly didnāt expect the onslaught Jersey threw at us. Massive commitment across the field, massive enjoyment (and not a little banter - āSit down please!ā) in the stand. Already booked for the return fixture in February. Chapeaux Jersey!
