Blues have 2 Saints starting and 3 on the bench, Taylor is still on loan from Dragons (and is the brother of an ex-blue player) and it looks like we may have signed or giving a trial to a prop from Worcester, but has played a lot at Hartpury.

Bedford Blues starting XV:

15. George Hendy (S), 14. Seán French, 13. Ethan Grayson (S), 12. Michael Le Bourgeois, 11. Dean Adamson, 10. Will Maisey, 9. Alex Day (C); 1. Joey Conway, 2. Jack Hughes, 3. Corrie Barrett, 4. Robin Williams, 5. Jordan Onojaife, 6. Huw Taylor (Dragons), 7. Jac Arthur, 8. Tui Uru

Bedford Blues Replacements:

16. Jacob Fields, 17. Lewis Holsey (Worcester), 18. Ed Prowse (S), 19. Emeka Atuanya (S), 20. Charles Rylands, 21. Jake Garside (S), 22. Matt Worley, 23. Pat Tapley

Only followed todays scores via twitter for Bedford vs Donny. How many tries conceded to the dreaded rolling maul? Sounded painful. Suppose we know what this weeks training sessions will be all about

Listened to the Caldy-Jersey game on the wireless. Fair play to Caldy, they made a really good game of it and were deservedly up at HT. Reds came out for the 2nd half and wrestled the game away from the newbies, but it really wasn’t 1 way traffic. Well played the boys from the Wirral. Island enjoyed the roast beef by the sounds of things

Donny deserved the 5 points, we were by far the better team. I wasn’t overly impressed by the ref either. Too many pedantic penalties. Truth be told after their great form recently I expected more from Bedford - they just couldn’t get into the game. The discipline from the Blues was really poor. you’re not going to win many games when you get 4 yellow cards.

Ealing took care of business today against Richmond. A solid performance, but seeing too many injuries again. I was thrilled to see a number of tourists that are in town for the Packers and Giants NFL games stopping by to watch the rugby. Overall, a very good and spirited crowd today (for Ealing) in beautiful fall weather. I'd guess 1200 or so. Richmond fans pleasant to chat with as always. Time for the RAG next weekend.

Why did you expect more? Any team who mauls against them and is good at it will always nullify Bedford

Sounds like it was a much better performance then previous weeks.

An interesting result was Richmond Saxons vs Ampthill 1881 at Dillingham Park ending 68-36 to the hosts. In front of a crowd of around 250?

I’m confused because Bedford said they’d learnt from their mistakes against Coventry and wouldn’t give away 20+ pens in a game again. I’m sure this time though they’ll definitely have learnt and that’s the last ill disciplined performance we’ll see this season…

There seems to be a systemic issue with discipline at Bedford and I would bet money that we have given away the most pens in the league/yellow cards for at least 3 seasons running. It doesn’t help that since the loss of a few of our better front rowers pre covid, we refuse to invest in Championship quality scrummagers. It doesn’t matter how good the backs are; if you concede a pen at every scrum you ain’t gonna win

I think you've hit the nail there Bluesman. Bedford were very good against the Pirates, probably because they had parity at the scrum and we kicked a few loose ones to the back three who were very good on counter attack. The Bedford backs were brilliant that day and ran us ragged in the second half. Fast forward to Jersey and we were hammered at scrum time, conceding a shed load of penalties and hence yellow cards. That comes from being under pressure for long periods.

Going from 10th to 9th is small consolation for Ampthill. With a long journey home. I listened to the game on BBC Radio Cornwall, and they have now taken on three full-time sides and battled them all the way. Well done, lads.

Up next is the battle of the giant-killers. Ampthill take on Caldy. I would love to be there and meet Big Eddie, but once again fate intervenes. Although I am down in Buckingham all this coming week, I will be pounding the motorway tarmac next Saturday whilst trying to help my wife navigate Twitter as I drive back home to Yorkshire.

I reckon it was Ampthill Extras vs Bedford Ath 2 that was the attraction.

Incredible penalty count against Pirates in that match and a couple of yellow cards. They must be going for a record in these this season but if you win matches perhaps its ok.

So, with the first team and the Colts side playing today, that’s four sides that Ampthill have put out this weekend. How many other Championship sides can match that?

I am a very long-term pirate (60 years!), but I must admit that our win aganst Ampthill was pure daylight robbery.
The boys from Ampthill were understandably distraught at the end as we scored in the final (83rd) minute. The pirates just couldn't get into the game through the first 70 minutes, though perhaps full-time fitness began to tell in the last 10 minutes. Both sides were defensively excellent, and there were very few line breaks on either side, which tended to snuff out the game. But how did the Pirates win after giving away about 20 penalties to about 5 from the A's? We also manged 2 yellow cards again. The Pirates other real strength was the defensive maul - Ampthill had about 5 catch and drive opportunites from about the 5 metre line, but were comfortably contained, and driven back (which we dismally failed to do against Bedford, and even more so against Jersey). The Pirates penalties in favour were mostly from destroying Ampthill in the scrummages. It was a strange game in so many ways, and Ampthill missed both their conversions, both from not particularly difficult position, which would have put them beyond catching.
However, in the end, the Pirates may have scored the try of the season for them. failing all through the game to string together more than 3 or 4 phases without turning the ball over, the try came when Ampthill lost their own lineout on the Pirates 22 with the clock already red. Suddenly the Pirates found their multi-phase play (I've just watched the replay, and it was exactly 20 phases) without dropping the ball, passing forward or failing to control the rucks.
So it was a terrific try, but I did feel sorry for Ampthill at the end.

It was the flat pass to the Pirates 7 that really got the defense turned and made the try possible. How he got through without being touched I will never know, but it was a match winning break IMHO

What was amazing about that try was that previously Pirates hadn't managed to string together more than three or four phases before dropping the ball or getting turned over at the breakdown. Then they produce that with virtually the last play of the game.
