The same ones that they'll be playing Mose under...
Who knows - but I'd be inclined to imagine Champ rules as it's not a league game and the season won't have started. Could be wrong.

I have heard, not official, that all Champ clubs playing friendlies against lower league opposition will have to adopt the new tackle laws.

I know that Coventry will be playing to the tackle "law" (which isn't changed at all, just enforces what the law says already about high tackles.
You know, because Champ sides, like the sides in the leagues below it, have such high tackle related concussion rates.
Don't get me started.

which makes sense - they can revert to 'normal' (as mentioned below, er, pretty much not applying the actual laws) again afterwards, while the lower sides will be desperately trying to prepare for, er, having pretty much the actual laws properly applied. So are in more need of practice.

Doesn't this show how absolutely stupid these new laws, which split the levels, are? Introduced by buffoons who should not be in control of the game that most of us have loved and invested in for years!

Look forward to seeing results/observations on today's games, believe we have:
- Pirates/Albion - Cov/LeicsLions - Carmarthen/Cambridge - RGC/Donny - SaleFC/Caldy
There may be others too.
Pleased that after a bit of a wait to nail it down, it's confirmed that Jersey Reds will travel to Richmond next Saturday, August 26th - KO at 2pm. Looking forward to it...

Cov 7-7 LL at HT.
Cov decidedly off colour and frankly don't deserve to be evens at this stage. Full of errors, and the penalty count against is ridiculous. Second half against the wind too, fielding a different side, but arguably weaker in several positions. Kvesic did nowt, and the pack was generally very poor indeed. Taking nothing from LL though - they should be in the mix at the end of the season.
Much better start to the second, with a quick Hutler try. 14-7
And another from Rigg. 21-7 Forwards have suddenly clicked...
And then, Cov down to 14 (yc) and LL hit back 21-14
And again 21-21. Breakaway try, and Dan Lewis having a good day from the tee
Opoku hits back immediately 26-21
Sweeping move finishes with a try under the sticks for Academy boy Theo Mannion. 33-21
33-21 FT. Must do better.

Blues v Saints tomorrow at 1:30pm, live stream for anyone wanting to watch some rugby!
I would hope looking at the 2 squads it should be a close game. Interesting Saints aren't using many 1st teamers and wonder if this could be how Premiership Cup teams could look like. The Saints in Blue have been regulars for Blues the last few seasons.

As mentioned by M728 on the N1 thread, it was the Jersey backs that made the difference against 'Mond, some real zip & pace esp during dry first half (2.30 KO meant we had same weather at Twickenham, but 50 mins later). The packs were more evenly matched, albeit Reds rotated quite a bit (9 players turned out in front row) & 1st-choice locks from last season missing (Cook retired/O'Connor injured). The wet conditions were quite a leveller in 2nd period, which saw just 12 points - 2 Jersey tries. Overall the Reds scored 8 tries, 6 of them from 5 back-three players + others from hooker Hadfield (overthrown home LO) + scrum-half Venner from close range.
The much-discussed disparity in tackle law interpretations for tier 2/3 teams didn't really materialise, can't say I would have noticed any change.
Good to get back out there anyway and to see some friends at the RAG. We're back there on Sunday week for cup action v LS

The tackle law saw a Cov back-rower go off for ten against Lions, but apart from that there was little difference.I couldn't go to Mose, so can't comment, but my contact at the ground reported - quite gruffly - that Sir was rather pernickity over it...

Au contraire. He was very fair for both sides on the tackle height. Perhaps a couple more against Cov which is not surprising

I didn't say that you said that he was favouring either side, I was stating my point of view on the penalties for high tackles. I think they were all legitimately given.

I recently attended an RFU course on the new tackle height as it affects M&J's rugby. The word that we were given was that ref's will come down very hard on the new laws early in the season in the hope that it will force players to tackle lower (you have been warned!!). However, my take was that it will affect the ball carrier more. There is now a thing called 'late and low' which basically means that if a tackler is set to make the tackle, the ball carrier cannot then drop their shoulder to go into contact. This is a fundamental change that we have taught players from the early days of contact at the age of 8/9. Old habits will die hard. Effectively, the ball carrier cannot invade the tacklers 'head space' with sanctions being a pen all the way to red for head/shoulder on head contact. It does not affect the top 2 levels, but everything below it will be. It is only a matter of time before it reaches elite rugby.

This is a nightmare for referees at the lower levels who have no assistants and no TMO.
